Organisations serious about AI ethics need governance structures proportionate to the technology's actual impact on people and decisions. This means AI ethics committees with genuine authority and independence, mandatory review processes for high-stakes AI deployments before they go live, regular auditing of deployed systems for bias, accuracy, and unintended consequences, clear reporting channels for employees who identify ethical issues with AI systems, and board-level oversight of AI risk as a strategic governance matter not merely a technical one managed by the IT function.

Preparing the Workforce for Ethical AI Deployment

Technology governance alone is insufficient. The humans who design, deploy, review, and act on AI outputs need to be equipped with the ethical reasoning skills to identify problems, ask difficult questions, and escalate concerns when they arise. Organisations that invest in AI ethics training at every level from board to frontline and that create explicit permission for employees to challenge AI-driven recommendations are building something genuinely valuable: a human layer of ethical oversight that complements technical controls and catches the edge cases that governance frameworks inevitably miss.
